My intent with this paper is to draw connections between some of the principles of nature and a part of the human experience. Primarily, I have focused on the concept of entropy and its use in contemporary art history to articulate feelings associated with the passage of time. At some point everyone is struck with the realization that we can never truly return. Time is irreversible.

These ideas are the product of contemplating natural processes within the material investigation of my sawdust sculpture A Temporary Monument to the Impossibility of Permanence.
