Lo Miller BFA Thesis Spring 2011
Balancing Act
My current body of work relies upon a systematic approach to art making. By adhering to a system of rules laid out in advance I, the artist, am removed from much of the decision making that would normally take place. My aesthetic ideals of perfection are pushed aside, and the system is allowed to take precedence; the importance of concept supersedes that of craft. In this thesis I have examined the ideas and strategies underlying concept- driven art with a specific focus on those who use systematic approaches to their process. I have found guidance and inspiration from creators such as Sol LeWitt, Hanne Darboven, and John Cage, among others. Through the process of creating these prints, I have come to accept who I am as an artist: beauty will always be an important aspect in my work. I have become enlightened with the knowledge that concept does not have to be placed ahead of craft in terms of importance; there can be a balance between the two.
