Shevawn Armstrong BFA Thesis Spring 2011
The Good Life: Art and the Everyday
This thesis is an exploration of art and the every day. Looking to philosophers like Plato and De Beauvoire, we learn that an unexamined life is not worth living, and that we are each responsible for the state of our existence. Artists such as Joseph Beuys and On Kawara suggest that all of life can be a work of art. Homesteaders and those practicing simple living principals offer an example of the way self-contemplation, conscious choice, and the practice of living by oneʼs ideals can provide a framework for an artful existence. The creative practice of everyday life is a form of art: the good life. I began this project with the intention of creating a sustainable, creative practice that is in direct dialogue with my daily life. Rather than being a separate endeavor, my goal is to guide my art and life into a completely interconnected production. My project is based on self-contemplation and daily practices of self – documentation. Over the last few months, I have engaged in recording the mundane details of my life and used this process and subsequent information as the core of my work.
