Kevin McLain BFA Thesis Spring 2011
Outside the garden
I have always had some innate curiosity for the untamed parts of the world, and our place as humans within them. I have become intrigued particularly with the way that the male gender interacts with the world around them. What drives men to climb mountains, to trek to the North Pole, to sail around Cape Horn? Informed by my personal experience growing up in a family of boys in rural Texas, I created a series of four, 18×24 inch oil paintings exploring the distinctiveness of the masculine heart, its unique purpose, and how this is first exhibited in male youth. I am convinced that there is something intriguing, beautiful, and necessary about the way a man’s heart is wired, and it has been my goal to better understand it.
