Coffee Prophecy
People have used symbols in different ways in different time periods, cultures and regions for thousands of years. While some symbols will visually change over time, but keep their meaning, some have not been affected by time and keep both their shapes and meanings. Some symbols’ meanings are different in different parts of the world and require some visual connections to make sense.
My challenge is to create a memorable experience for diverse audiences to educate them on the evolution of symbols. The experience will include an interactive video series that can be accessed in an online virtual space. The videos will use linear storytelling and observational humor in order to show how Turkish coffee reading navigates twenty-first century symbology.
The idea of similarity in the use of symbols between different time periods gave me my project idea to focus on the similarity between Turkish coffee reading and twenty-first century symbols in a humorous way. When reading coffee grounds, the emptying of coffee from a cup will leave some pattern on the inside surface of the cup. These cup patterns and shapes created in the coffee grounds are said to predict the future, give insight into today’s world, or explain past happenings. Understanding the meanings of grounds has certainly been influenced by meanings
