Evan Humphreys BFA General Fine Arts Thesis Spring 2016
The work is situated in a web where marketing, fiction, objects, commerce, social media, and humor all coexist, and the objects set out to make the viewer aware of simple marketing and economic phenomena:
I give my capital to an entity, and they use it for their own needs
The entity uses images and media to reach out to me, in a grasp at my capital
I am interested in exploiting marketing tropes in an attempt at exposing these actions to the self-described “visually literate” viewer. Through the appropriation of marketing tropes on social media (the handmade, the minimal, the desert, the purchased lifestyle), these actions can be more easily scrutinized not only as empty gestures, but also manufactured works of fiction.
These products and their marketed representations say to the viewer, of themselves and the tropes they inhabit, “here we are.”
