Seeking Home
Seeking Home is a meditation on my identity as a queer woman, my love of warm and beautiful light, and how all of this comes into play in the space and feeling of ‘home.’ This body of work is for every queer person who has ever had a complicated relationship with these ideas. For many people in the LGBTQ community, the houses we grew up in were not always places of total acceptance. Many of us who experienced this dissonance found our place in the world after leaving our roots behind and establishing ourselves in a welcoming community. This process of creating a safe and warm home of our own is a period of unprecedented liberation. We are free to establish and express our identities within the spaces we inhabit and the family of friends we begin to form.
In making this work, I’ve grown as a woman, a friend, and an artist. I’ve learned how to better take care of myself and I’ve come to love and nest in a city which, for a long time, represented my trials and unfortunately, my trauma. These photographs are the result of my journey, and a documentation of the unconditional love my friends and I have for each other. Seeking Home a body of work which sparks a conversation around emotion, memory, and what it means to be a young, queer woman carving out her life in such a tumultuous period of growth.
