Amarice Jenkins BFA Illustration Thesis Spring 2024
I’ve made six different illustrations as well as a zine explaining each of their stories. These illustrations all started out as paintings as I have been trying to find my style and mixing my preferred mediums. I have a love for painting and digital art and have not mixed the two before this project. I have a previous connection to Greek myths and storytelling that helped me conceive and define this project. Humans are constantly drawn to stories and tales and myths are fantastical narratives reflecting the time they were created. Reading these stories in a contemporary time can help us reflect on our own beliefs and learn from what the myths are trying to teach. Some of the myths I chose are about transformation, rebirth, or love. There’s an attachment people have to these stories and it is up to the readers now to find out what it means to them. My illustrations are just a way to lead people back into the stories. For the viewer to be engaged with the figures chosen: Iphis, Apollo, Hermaphroditus, Dionysus, Tiresias, Caeneus.
