Anya Woodbury BFA Illustration Thesis Spring 2024
For my thesis, I created a 4 product kickstarter featuring
my queer sun and moon characters, Aurora and Selene. I have
been creating with Selene and Aurora since 2018, so I have a
lot of history with these two. I just had to continue playing with
their story for my thesis.
These products were inspired directly by the history of
our universe and the natural existence of queerness in the world.
Often, queer people are viewed as “unnatural”. Same sexual be-
havior has been identified in over 1500 species such as lemurs,
spiders, whales, bonobo monkeys, and more. Homophobia, to
my knowledge, has only been identified in one. That one species
is us. One of my passions is taking facts about the ocean or space,
and turning them into characters. Queer people deserve a place
in this practice, as they are just as natural and scientific as any
other being.
The space facts I chose to draw inspiration from were the
creation of our moon, and the origin of our sun. Theia, which
was a mars sized planet, collided with a very different earth than
we know today. We know that the moon was formed after this
collision, but the time frame of this formation is up for debate.
Earlier theories state that it must’ve formed over months or years.
A new theory proposes that the moon formed in mere hours
after this collision.
Our sun was birthed out of a spinning cloud of gas and
dust called the solar nebula. As the nebula collapsed under its
own gravity, it began spinning faster and flattened into a disk
shape. Most of the gas and dust swirled into the center, forming
the mass of our sun. Some of the remainder created the planets
and other objects in our solar system, and the rest was blown
away by the young sun’s solar wind.
All of these products were inspired by our history. I hope
you find something that moves you.
