Kobey Bonin BFA Intermedia Thesis Spring 2024
Muscled is a two-part print and sculptural installation consisting of three ladder-like
sculptural elements, and twenty-one individual prints produced with block printing inks
and laser-cut printing plates, printed on Kozo paper. The imagery utilized connects to
my personal experience with progressive, terminal disease and its subsequent
diagnosis. More specifically, the imagery in the print and sculpture comes directly from
comparative muscle biopsies and physiologically altered molecular structures from
muscle cells. The two-part installation is accompanied by an identically titled publication
produced in an edition of 25, consisting of ten pages of risograph printed graphics and
written material. The written material in the publication covers the emotional cost of lost
capabilities, future uncertainty, and internalized ableism. These three elements
compose Muscled, representing the culmination of over one year of development work
and in-depth collaborative critique.
