Jordan Rautio BFA Illustration Thesis Spring 2024
Unconditional is a 40 page self ended picture book
dummy about found family, love and acceptance. The book
takes the form of a diary belonging to our main character,
Piper. The reader is guided through the storyline via diary
entries full of doodles, photographs and taped-in elements.
We begin early in Piper’s life, learning a bit about both her
background, religious upbringing, and the role of monsters
in the world this book takes place in. As a teen, Piper writes
that she has suddenly gained all the attributes of a fairy, a
species that falls under the “monster” category that she has
been taught by her family to hate. She tries to hide it from
them, as she knew they would disapprove, but inevitably, her
secret was discovered. There is a significant time skip after
this plot point, as Piper both lost motivation to write and
misplaced the diary all together. By the time she returns to
documenting her life in this diary, she is off to college.
The rest of the entries document her experiences
navigating a brand new city full of monsters just like her.
Piper takes us along for the ride as she makes new friends,
has new adventures, and learns how to love and accept
herself for who she is.
