Zachary Marvick BFA Communication Design Thesis Spring 2015
SML TLK
SML TLK is an online publication featuring ten interviews with Portland creatives. Zachary developed a theoretical basis for his work and set out to demystify the archetype of the Artist and to illustrate the pragmatic aspects of a creative practice. There is a cliché in our society that the untenable endeavor of creative pursuits must somehow be authoritatively validated. A creative must either “make it” or give up the whimsical aspiration of art. The societal pressure of gaining notoriety by means of critical affirmation dissuades many people from creative aims. Zachary gathered over 15 hours of audio which was transcribed, edited, and paired with photographs. These finished interviews have been published digitally to reach a wide audience and to be shared for free. They show studio environments, artifacts and tools, as well as portraits. SML TLK is a publication which is meant to empower and communicate the importance of self initiated creativity for the well being and health of our communities.
