Women in Punk
Women in Punk is a picture book that introduces young children to female musicians within the punk genre. Through the use of an expressive illustration style, along with short, rhythmic poems, I present the fourteen women within this book as strong female role models for both girls and boys. These women speak to feminism in various ways, with their ability to follow their dreams and gain success; having confidence in their craft, despite what other may say or think. Through this project, issues such as gender identity, vulnerability, race, and beauty ideals are brought up in a simplified and easily digestible manner that children can comprehend. It is my intention for this book to be an introductory tool that allows for further discussion on feminist ideas between the adult reader and the young listener.
