The Logic of Places in Between: Culture, Displacement, & the Wanderer’s Tale
Admittedly, any definition of culture is complicated and cannot be simply defined by a fixed people or place. Nevertheless, my work wrestles with this topic, via mixed media installation that addresses the definition of home and culture as being characterized by multiplicity. By observing my own cross-cultural identity as a young woman who grew up overseas, I hope to illuminate the idea that home that can exist between worlds, and that locality that can be found despite a person’s constant displacement when moving between cultures.
I look to both create a space in which I can situate my own cultural identity, as well as a space in which getting lost, and staying lost are fundamental, and become a means of navigation. Displacement becomes a state of comfort, and through this state, the familiar and the unfamiliar of cultures and places disintegrate, allowing for cross-cultural connections and situations to arise.
