Leader of the Pack
Leader of the Pack is a story that follows the leader of an all-female biker gang known as Satan’s Sisters in the 1950s in the Western United States. Jezebel Rodriguez, only nineteen years old, is haunted by her older sister’s death. Her sister was killed seven years ago by the leader of a rival biker gang called Les Bitches. With new information she sets out for revenge, but her mission is derailed due to an accident on her motorcycle, leaving her stranded in a small mountain town with the rest of her gang. During this time she starts to experience strange symptoms that she later learns were caused by a werewolf she encountered during her crash. Jezebel befriends Jane, the local librarian, who helps Jezebel as she struggles with her developing lycanthropy. The two fall in love in the process.
This story exists as part of a comic series; for my thesis I created the first comic issue in the series. The comic is a collaboration between me and my husband, Zach, who wrote the script. There were challenges and benefits that went along with collaborating with a writer. Throughout the process I learned how to adapt the script and take liberties with the story. To feel comfortable with the material, I researched important aspects of the story such as bikers, werewolves and the role of lesbians in 1950s society. I have paid close attention to the aesthetic choices while developing the pages, examining what comics as a medium can accomplish.
