Aquarium is a collection of fragments that attempts to archive the narrator’s descent into adulthood and the gulf this transition created between her somatic experiences and mental processing. Through fragmentary stories of adolescence, dreamscapes, and a fictional marriage, the narrator explores themes of identity, authenticity, autonomy, performance, and apocalypse. Aquarium studies the quelling of idiosyncratic ways of being by a society that fears difference, and the turmoil of feeling desires that simultaneously subvert and reinforce social rules.
