To the Places We Lived
To the Places We Lived is an exploration of the connection between memory and music; a collection of essays, lists, lyrics and letters. It is a reappraisal of a songwriter’s work and a critical exploration of a songwriter’s influences. It is a chronicle of addiction, mental illness, incarceration, release and recovery. It is a meditation on loss, on ghosts. It asks, do the dead know what they leave behind? and what do we leave behind when we go? From the frantic, manic energy of recording sessions and seemingly endless tours to the thick and heavy isolation of incarceration, from rising floodwaters to endless stretches of road in flyover country, To the Places We Lived is an almanac, an archive, a jukebox, a library, a setlist and hymnbook. It is a reminder that promises should be spoken quietly and records played loud.
