Davida Rae BFA Printmaking Thesis Fall 2016

Set in Stone

My thesis work consists of five fading sets of stone lithographs.  Each set is a hand-drawn recreation of an antique Bay Area postcard from the turn of the century.  The images are slightly enlarged from the original postcard size and the images were all gleaned from eBay.

Using a mixture of nitric acid and gum arabic I gradually erased each drawn lithograph during the course of printing.  The rate at which they decay is not uniform because lithography is an unpredictable medium.  Through chemical defacement of image on limestone the physical susceptibility of the Bay Area’s industrial landscapes are reflected.  The entire body of prints includes renderings of the San Francisco Cliff House on fire in 1907,  Lincoln School on fire in 1906, the Southbound Pacific train yard in Oakland (date unknown), and two views of the Bay Bridge circa 1933.
