Alex Johnson BFA Thesis Fall 2011
Adriel's Story
For my thesis project I have created eleven pages of a fantasy graphic novel that features an intimate focus on its characters. Using gritty line work and saturated digital color I have created an introductory episode about the character Adriel. Her story is ultimately about my growing up with autism, Asperger’s syndrome and ADHD, and my coming into clinical depression at an older age. It is about the end of drifting through college and drifting through life, and the coming of something new. The need to challenge these overwhelming forces in my life are seen in Adriel, as she not only fights a war with the forces that attack her village, but with herself as well. In these eleven pages the reader meets Adriel and learns of a major decision that she must make. This episode marks the beginning of her story. Adriel has a sordid past, filled with trauma, and condescension from others toward her trauma. The world I have crafted, as with most fantasy, is a mixture of metaphors and allegories for the way I experience and interpret the world. This is chapter 2 of a much larger story, that said, it is also a full sequence.
