Conor MacBride Illustration Thesis Spring 2019
This 172 page book behaves like a cassette deck, it plays, pauses, rewinds, fast forwards, stops and records. The cover of the book establishes a shape system of player buttons that act as visual icons to assist the reader in navigating this books varied content. The content of this book contains comics, photography, typography and visual essays. It is a book of love songs, performances, personas, and robots. It’s an ode to early 90s nostalgia, heart-break, rebirth, self-loathing, queerness, memory and memento. Initially this project started out as a magazine that addressed my own self and identity that challenges negative aspects affecting gay/queer culture. Ive dabbled in different gay communities and often encounter sexism, misogyny, racism, ableism, trans-phobia, femme-phobia, fat-phobia, oppressive body dysmorphia and consent issues. When it came to making the actual work for this project I realized that I was not ready to unpack, tackle and dismantle of these issues. When I started this project I was more focused on how inclusive I was being rather than actually making something meaningful. The change in the project was necessary and has yielded a more honest result and visually stunning result. In making this project, I have realized that a good way to cause change in the community is to challenge yourself to be better. I have also learned its never good to make work that you think others want you to make. Im learning to believe in the worth of my artistic ability and this book definitely brings some much needed validation.
