Vanessa Kauffman BFA Thesis Spring 2009
Language & Image Outside the World of Appearance
A series of prints and other works on paper are the result of a semester spent meeting and conversing with six individuals who are blind, and one woman who works with mobility training for blindness. My work addresses the personal and poetic discoveries I made with these individuals by evoking and challenging ideas of time, space, thought, communication and sense. By working only with individuals who lost their sight after having it once, I was able to invigorate memories of sight in a way that simulated myself, the work, and. hopefully the viewer as well.
Throughout the collection and organization of tis work, I have manifested work that utilizes, and in many regards, manipulates the material nature of paper, ink, and cut-out, as to create images that are rich for the sighted viewer’s senses. In this thesis of organization and translation, I took to hart words from Paul Ricoeur’s essay, The Paradigm of Translation, allowing myself to translate, “not in the sense of a restricting obligation, but in the sense of ‘the things to be done’ so that human action can simply continue.”
