This paper tells the story of an artist excavating her own history. In the fall of 2012 I came to the realization that there are memories and moments from my childhood that have followed me forward into adulthood and that are affecting the way that I live my life. I embarked on a project of discovery, digging into my past and attempting to unearth the connection between these difficult and traumatic seasons and to change the way that they affect me today. My process involved the collection of information and memory, information processing through the making of charts, graphs, maps and timelines, emotional processing, and finally, the act of art-making in reflection of this exploration. In the end, this project and the process I created has allowed me to create a new relationship with my history and to take steps towards overcoming lingering fears and building confidence in myself and my work.
