“Food For Comfort” is a 27 minute experimental documentary that shares dishes from Lao, Filipino, and Chinese culture and includes voice-over commentary from both the participants of the documentary and the creator of the film. The experimental style of the film comes from the lack of faces depicted in the documentary with the focus of the camera work entirely on the food and the hands of the people preparing the dishes. The intent of this documentary is to challenge the Western perspective of Asian foods and display them in a “family” and “comfort” focused way. Thematically, the film leans into the more personal relationships between the foods and the people who make them. Some inspirations for the film include popular Chinese content creator, Li Ziqi, for the style of the documentary and Joe Hisaishi and Hans Zimmer for the music.
