Melvin Kramble BFA Animated Arts Thesis Spring 2023
Reveille, a French word that translates to “wake up”. Reveille is also a bugle call used by the US Army to signal the start of the day, and by the time it plays a soldier is already awake dressed, in formation, and awaiting orders. My piece, Reveille, explores some of the tolls paid by experiencing war. Service to my country has forever altered the way I experience life, specifically my inability to stay asleep for than an 2 hours or at a time.
The work is projected from a gear locker that was used in my deployments onto a canvas constructed using uniforms that were also used on deployment. Animated loops accompanied by audio are used to communicate the some of the disturbances that interrupt my ability to sleep. The content is looped to reflect this never ending cycle, which plays out several times per night every night since my the end of my last deployment which ended almost 20 years ago.
