Shadow Sites seek to develop a new relationship between painting and place. In contrast to the objective distance and grand romantic visions of much landscape painting these pieces are firmly rooted in the soil from which they are made. Physical collaboration with raw material merges with more emotional reminiscence to create images which evidence the duality of our experience with natural places.

Observation, touch, process, and physical engagement coalesce in my paintings and installation in order to emphasize that these paintings are a place and time. Through a combination of media and objects, this installation presents a compressed experience of landscape to the viewer. These Shadow Sites serve as experiential collections, illuminating moments of artistic clarity inspired by specific sites and moments of contact throughout Oregon and Hawaii.
