Sara Rieber MFA Visual Studies Thesis 2021
Le Ballet en Travesti (The ballet in disguise)
Language, fashion, ballet and performance are elements that have found their way into my practice. This thesis explores how my research into the history of ballet and 19th century performance holds as a foothold for me that is threaded through the lenses of art history, fashion and consumerism. My experience as a child dancer are placed in juxtoposition to my process as an adult artist. I am fusing identities and histories with objects, language and costume. I am trying to find what lies between nudity and costume: that in between liminal state of public display and personal reality. I bring you into my practice through an anthropological lens, but also as self reflection, fantasy, metamorphosis, and disguise.
