OBSERVATION IS EVALUATION IS AWARENESS

Drawing inspiration from the nauseating hyperawareness experienced by the character Antoine Roquentin from Jean-Paul Sartre’s La nausée, this paper delineates a methodological approach I have constructed. This approach affords an encounter of subjective existence, beginning with attentive observation— which, I argue, is a discipline that requires continual practice. I discuss the difference between looking and seeing, in addition to describing both terms’ relation to the act of observation. I conclude by asserting that the self-reflexivity revealed through observation allows for an encounter with one’s own existence.
