My first piece depicts a flock of attractive red spheres that float over a landscape filled with natural growth. Here I address our first emotional at-tachment to objects, which is instilled by the pursuit of Ideas & our trust in Advertizing. Directly, I wanted to set off these spheres as incredibly impor-tant, and more important as very desirable. This is crucial for the rest of the series.
Formally, this image needed to establish the mood of my series. It is relatively bright, and full of color. I establish an unreal space in which grav-ity works differently. I establish a certain depth of field that I use consis-tently throughout the project.
Baudrillard notes that in a discussion about how we see objects, one must address advertising. It is the first sources of how we come to emotion-ally understand objects, although it is not the last. Advertizing paints us as possessors of not just utilities, but of ideas. In my first image, these red spheres are tempting red apples that drip with endless benefits, and solve problems we didn’t know we had.
At the same time the organic material is still lush and fertile. This is to represent the fact that the objects we already possess personally, and within our community are still viable and useable things. Just because these other worldly, surreal spheres exist doesn’t mean that they will deliver what they seem to promise. Just because advertized products exist, doesn’t mean we have good reason to abandon the good material we have.
