The Low-Residency MFA in Visual Studies presents a lecture by artist and PNCA faculty member Hayley Barker.

Hayley Barker’s oil paintings and drawings frequently take the form of expressive, abstracted landscapes. Often relating directly to psychology and the body, these works explore the physicality and internal sensations of unmediated encounters with nature. Each of Barker’s projects is made in conjunction with research into literary sources, which form a framework for her formal and thematic explorations.

Barker’s most recent solo exhibition Cathedrals, at Charles A. Hartman Fine Art in Portland, OR, was reviewed in Art in America, the Oregonian, and Visual Arts Source. She has exhibited her work regionally and beyond, including at Froelick Gallery, Disjecta, PICA’s TBA Festival, Basil Hallworth Gallery (in Powell’s City of Books), and the Art Gym at Marylhurst University.

In 1996 Barker received her BA from the University of Oregon, followed by an MA and MFA in 2001, from the University of Iowa. In 2007 she completed her MAT at Lewis and Clark College, in Portland, OR. Currently, Barker lives and works in Portland, OR and is represented by Charles A. Hartman Fine Art. She is a native Oregonian.
