Bespoke Bodies: The Design & Craft of Prosthetics

CCA&C at PNCA in partnership with the Design Museum Boston will present Bespoke Bodies: The Design & Craft of Prosthetics. Thoughts of artificial limbs may conjure up movie imagery like Star-Wars-hero Luke Skywalker’s prosthetic hand in The Empire Strikes Back — in reality these devices are even more meaningful and, in some cases, just as high-tech — pushing boundaries for veterans who have lost limbs in combat, paralympic athletes breaking records with adaptive technology, and even a young girl who designed and 3D-printed her own glitter-spouting “unicorn” arm, just to name a few. Behind these incredible devices are engineers, clinicians, prosthetists, makers, designers, and of course, patients. Over 2 million people in the U.S. live with limb loss. The exhibition we’re developing will feature amazing artifacts alongside the stories of the people who create, fit, and use prosthetics. To complement this first-of-its-kind exhibition, we’ll host events featuring prosthetics users, medical experts, and industry thought leaders, as well as produce a major print publication of all the imagery, research, and exhibition content.
