Man Haircut was a performance I did where, in wanting to get the full
experience of a barbershop, I set up an appointment and asked a
barber to give me a “man haircut” with no further details or
instructions. This would mean that the barber would have to define
“man” and “man haircut” – the results being on my head. He ended
up giving me his own haircut. This means he marked my appearance
with his own specific version of maleness that I could then own and
alter myself. This is the storybook version of that performance.
