A papier mache life-size Academy Award, shrugging with an expression of uncertainty. His head bears the inscription of the word אמת (“Truth”), which the Maharal of Prague is said to have written upon the forehead of the golem, bringing him to life. The pedestal bears the commandments against graven images and idol worship, in the original Hebrew text.
Flanking the Oscar are paintings of a Comedy and Tragedy mask, respectively. The comedic, speaks to the yiddishized and caricatured history of Jews as comic-relief and punchlines. The tragic, by contrast, is an assemblage of references to Oscar-baity tear-jerking Holocaust films, and maudlin imagery.
