“footnotes,” part of Ashley’s current /ˈpro͞oviNG ˌɡround[s]/ series, is a multimedia installation that consists of “elevated” footnotes conjured from critical autotheoretical musings printed on charmeuse, georgette and linen; single channel videos with spoken word and bluegrass music; curated stories, songs and archives including a book, bright leaf tobacco leaves and a ghostlike photograph printed on chiffon; and discarded and disrupted footnotes, historical newspaper articles and archives.
A scene of police responding to a peaceful protest is projected onto discarded footnotes, historical newspaper articles and archives, accompanied by the bluegrass song Can’t Feel At Home performed by The Aldridge Family, the artist’s cousins.
