"draw me a sheep"

“draw me a sheep” is inspired by the book, The Little Prince.

Making up the signature are eight envelopes—each housing a drawing of a sheep. Made out of hand cut file folders, bound, and sealed shut. On one side there is a description of the drawn sheep inside; on the other side, a sealed envelope waiting to be opened.

Each envelope is hand-stamped. The format of each description refers to the methods and systems by which books, journals, and other documents are cataloged and classified in a library database.

The cataloging system includes notes and information describing the qualities of the object, such as the materials, process, where is was made, the date received, and an red stamped accession number.

The words create a new mental image that is never going to be the image of the actual drawn sheep inside.

We can describe the character of the sheep, its staggering character, its’ surprising character, or even its girth. But what kind of sheep is it, really? The imagined sheep will always be better than the representation of the sheep.
