Engaging in a heartfelt exploration of my studio practice, including my deep affinity for the materials I employ, El Baúl de Recuerdos y Maravillas represents a deeply personal design initiative. It seeks to provide comfort, agency, and familiarity to my beloved 91-year-old mother as she transitions from living independently in her home for many years into an assisted living environment.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Agnes Martin and Sol LeWitt and also from the rich history of Kunstkammers, curiosity cabinets, and steam trunks, alongside insights gained from diverse resources I consulted, personal reflections, and experiencing my mom’s mental health downfall, this thesis project aspires to infuse the living space with warmth, functionality, and a profound sense of emotional connection and well-being. Through the craft of grid-based design principles, the meticulous arrangement of beloved objects, and a deep respect for materials, including wood, paper, book board, fabric, and pattern design, this thesis explores the process of conceptualization, design, and crafting.
El Baúl de Recuerdos y Maravillas aims to illuminate how art, craft, and creativity can transcend mere aesthetics, transforming environments and enriching lives.
