“This Just In … Endless War”—Justseeds/Combat Paper Workshop

Our eighth program for the exhibition Gathering Autonomy: Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, Gathering Hands: “This Just In … Endless War”—Justseeds/Combat Paper Workshop

In a free, drop-in, and open to the public workshop at the 511 Gallery in the new Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design at Pacific Northwest College of Art, Justseeds member Aaron Hughes and Combat Paper facilitators Drew Cameron and Jesse Albrecht will hold a three day combat paper, pulp printing, and screen printing workshop. During the workshop military uniforms will be transformed into handmade paper with pulp stenciled and screen printed images from a variety of sources including propaganda posters, newspapers, war photography and hand drawn imagery.
April 8 – 10 from 3PM – 6PM
Aaron Hughes is an artist, teacher, organizer, member of Justseeds, and Iraq War veteran, whose work seeks out poetics, connections, and moments of beauty, in order to construct new languages and meanings out of personal and collective traumas. I use these new languages and meanings to create projects that attempt to de-construct systems of dehumanization and oppression.

Drew Cameron is a hand papermaker, printer and book artist based in San Francisco, CA. He has his degree in Forestry from the University of Vermont and served in the US Army from 2000-06. His love for paperworks began as a teen but was rekindled under the mentorship of Drew Matott in 2004 at the Green Door Studio Artist Collective in Burlington, VT. Drew was the managing director of Green Door from 2006-10, co-founder of Combat Paper in 2007 and partner in the Peoples Republic of Paper, LLC. His current and ongoing work with Combat Paper and as a partner in the Shotwell Paper Mill in San Francisco is practicing and teaching the art and craft of hand papermaking and encouraging others to do the same.

Jesse Albrecht is an artist working in Iowa City. He teaches yoga and at Kirkwood Community College, and is a janitor at a VA hospital. A year long Iraq deployment bisected his graduate school experience—receiving a MFA in ceramics and drawing in 2006. He is an Elder member of Paintallica.
