Furniture was my family’s financial foundation. These rocks, a literal foundation, have been collected from significant sites around Portland where my ancestors lived and worked. My color palette is composed of three sets: the colors of the Romanian flag (red, yellow and blue) signify Eva’s birthplace; the colors of the American flag represent me; and pale versions of the two flags denote Sarah and signify the assimilation of immigrants into American society and the fading of Old Country traditions. With these threads, symbolic of individual bloodlines, I tie together three generations of women.
