Alone. Together. is an exploration into how and why portraits function in the ways that they do as well as a personal exploration of why I as an artist am compelled to make them.

Portraits can be and have been many things. Mine are explorations of the concept of identity and the relationship between notions of self and other. They are also an expression of love, a cry for help and a manifestation of my belief that the infinite is encountered most readily in the small, the mundane and the seemingly ordinary experience of looking someone in the eye. Creating portraits, this work and capstone suggest, mirrors the core and universal work of humanity; that is to embrace rather than run from our common loneliness and to work to see one another–in spite of and because of the impossibility of meeting.
