Marybel Martin BFA Painting Thesis Fall 2015

Dear Diary

Caught in a whirlwind of emotional chaos, confessional art becomes a resting place for the mind. Based on true personal stories interpreted through a fantastical perspective, Dear Diary is the culmination of a year long illustrated diary that has been translated and transformed into a painted triptych as a narrative that encases all of the individual vignettes that compose the larger story. The story is told through the use of fictional characters created especially to tell this story. My intent with this piece was for the viewer to travel through the piece and explore the different stories separately or as a whole. Looking at the stories from a third party perspective has allowed me to move on emotionally as well as allowed the growth that comes along with difficult experiences.
