My thesis project consists of a series of paintings created with screenprint collage and acrylic paint. I explore ideas of deconstruction and reconstruction, the impermanence and rebirth of nature, and identity through time.
The etymology of the word Mandala informs my ideas and process. ‘Manda’ means center or essence and ‘La’ means container or possessor.
The main questions I seek to answer in this project are: What is a mandala? What is not a mandala? How can I reinterpret the way the mandala is represented and still stay true the what a mandala is and means? How do these mandalas represent me? How can I use the mandala form to grapple with ideas such as time, layers of time, sediment, mandala as a universe, the interaction of universes, and the mandala as a gateway?
