Colin Laurel BFA Illustration Thesis Spring 2016

Love of the Lost

This body of work examines the bond between animals and their owners below the poverty line. Using field sketching, interviews with animal welfare clients, and hands-on collaboration with the Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team, I illustrated a series of drawings centered not only on the impoverished struggle, but also on anecdotes depicting day-to-day events and life prior to and after homelessness. In addition, I produced a supplementary book of developmental work that features resources for the poverty-stricken, as well as textual arcs from the interviewees. This is but a small start of a growing attempt to illuminate a group whose circumstances have eluded concrete statistics.
