Distance Culling
This essay sets out to describe the mixed media installation piece Distance Culling, the context surrounding my work, and the strategies used in the creation of the artistic experience. Distance Culling is an investigation of the ecotone between a created virtual world, as presented through an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, and a narrow walled physical enclosure. The experience is designed to place the viewer’s physical body in both realities simultaneously by providing the digital representation of hands in the virtual environment that mirror the movements of the viewer’s actual hands. This simultaneity creates a tension between the seen and the felt. This paper argues that this piece, through strategies of installation and computer game, challenges the viewer to consider the nature of virtual reality as it becomes increasingly present in everyday life.
