Debra Woodward BFA General Fine Arts Thesis Spring 2015

both, on both sides

Textiles serve as a site for the voice of the maker. As a neutral space, textiles act as a silent witness, to quote Maxine Bristow, to the routines of everyday. As objects, textiles allow the voice of the maker to coalesce on the cloth into a material presence, and they present an ambiguous space for the voice of the maker. Cloth allows a space for the language of contradictions and for multiple perspectives. As a material object, the strength of textiles are that that they remind and reflect the same physical vulnerabilities that affect the body. This body of work is meant to remind that voice is something that is embodied.
