Skylar Leaf BFA Intermedia Thesis Spring 2015

Endless Noise: Audio Loops and the Potential of Repetitive Sound is an insight into the often intangible ways music is connected to the things we feel and the ways in which we remember. This paper examines how repetitive compositions in music are important to understanding the relationship between music, memory, and emotion. This paper begins with the discussion of repetitive techniques using audio tape loops and audio feedback within musical composition used by avant-garde artists as a way to create a new style of composition that was outside of typical Western musical structure. These composition styles had a strong influence in the development of what would eventually be considered Western drone music. Drone music is a minimalist musical genre that focuses on the use of repetitive or sustained sounds. It is through drone music’s extended musical composition that the relationship between music, memory and emotion can be explored.
