Morgan Carver BFA Printmaking Thesis Spring 2014

Passengers

For the thesis work I have created and practiced my own methodology of observing the everyday, specifically the strangers that I see on my commutes to and from Pacific Northwest College of Art. To hone my skills of observation, I’ve adopted elements of the methods of Sherlock Holmes that inspire my way of consciousness, awareness and noticing more than the elementary. By understanding what it means to observe some- thing as routine as a commute, with a conscious state of heightened awareness and observation skills I want to highlight the importance and magic of noticing others around us. My job as an artist is to remind my viewer how each of us as humans share forever a collective identity of experiencing vulnerability, despair, humor and happiness, I seek to understand that a consciousness of ourselves is simply not enough for sustaining the vitality of our collective existence as people; after all strangers are really just human beings that we have not met yet.
