Contemporary Corporeal: The Disappearing Body

This paper explores my personal and moral choice to omit the human figure from my artwork. I will delineate previous modes of feminist body representation that influence my resolution. These modes include the re-appropriation of the traditional nude, the abject female, and the post-human art movement. The evolution of these modes illuminates the emergence of what I call the “contemporary corporeal.” Through abstraction, ambiguity, display, and materials, I focus on the shifting materiality of the human body rather than the figure in my own work.
