Jonathan Gann MFA Visual Studies Thesis 2014

Queering Space

This thesis discusses a series of thoughts on topics that orbit my practice as a maker. I cite a number of thinkers—including but not limited to Annamarie Jagose, Lee Edelman, Sara Ahmed, and Gaston Bachelard—in order to excavate the words queer and space, showing the rich histories and interpretations surrounding them. My interest lies in the point at which the two intersect and overlap. Using the terminology queering space, I show how space and place become “zones of possibility.” I define a number of queer tactics, showing their relationship to queering space, by talking about the practices of contemporary makers not generally associated with queer theory. These makers include Oscar Tuazon, Robert Gober, and Ed Atkins.
