Mold Blossom displays the spectrum of yellow to orange. The name is derived from a song called “Mold Yoga” by Salem band, Sustentacula. For this mixtape, I used a few bands from the my hometown, Salem, and its local music scene because orange and yellow tones remind me of seeing shows in High School. The songs I chose captured the essence of these colors, some literally and figuratively; a few reference Autumn and the sun, while others have upbeat tempos and energetic pulsating beats.
The rectangular pattern alludes to windows of the past, also referencing the venue for local Salem music called “The Ike Box.” I was drawn to the geometric grid because of the clean and effective closed-eye flicker effect it produced. With this machine, people described feelings of comfort, solar energy, enlightenment, and happiness.
When listening to Sunshine on My Shoulders by John Denver, someone said, “I wasn’t expecting to experience such a flood of emotion. This comforting glow made me think of a puppy I had when I was younger that died. I felt a strange sense of sadness and happiness simultaneously.”
Mold Yoga by Sustentacula inspired an interesting recollection by one participant who stated “I really liked the track that accompanied this machine. The sounds in combination with the warm orangey tones inspired some cool visuals. I felt like I was lying in a pile of gold in the summertime while staring at a ceiling fan from an old house of mine.”
Mold Blossom proved to be a heavily nostalgic machine, triggering long forgotten memories .
