Stop The Presses! A Primer in Hand Lettering for the Twenty-First Century

Recognizing that designers presently use a computer to digitally simulate human error rather than plainly creating letterforms by hand, in my thesis work I created a typeface and set of instructions that show my audience how to execute the traditional practice of hand-lettering. This craft has existed since the beginning of written language and is still apparent in the present day. I see this as a definite sign that there is something to it, something that is not going away, and something that the public has realized is more attractive than the means of contemporary design. Furthermore, the project not only shares how to conduct the act of hand lettering but also the history of writing and the glyphs that are currently used in the United States. This typeface, named Slip Up, was developed to encourage the behavior of self-reliance and to empower designers to use their own hand to create.
