Kelly Raine BFA Thesis Spring 2013

The purpose of this this thesis was to explore the ways in which technology has changed filmmaking by allowing for the combining of two elements: com-positing and animation. This essay includes research compiled by animation and film theorists, experiences of animators and filmmakers, interviews and thoughts about my own work. My explorations in this subject led me to con-sider three major areas in which this joining of art forms has changed filmmaking in recent years: the total control gained by approaching film from an animation standpoint, the subsequent democratization of the form, and the enhanced dreamlike qualities of film. To be clear about my own stance on these matters, considerable space is devoted to defining animation and com-positing mechanically and theoretically before illustrating the results of joining the two.

The film is a visual representation of the ideas expressed in the essay.
